Events to Feature Rocket Boys, Space Themes

Apr 27, 2005

Several events featuring the famed Rocket Boys and space themes are planned as part of National Teachers Appreciation Week, May 2-6.

From 6-7:30 p.m. Monday, May 2, at the Meadowbrook Mall Sears Court, the public is invited to meet The Rocket Boys; astronaut Dr. Story Musgrave; Mark "Indy" Kotche, a space operations specialist who works with the Hubble Telescope; and Miss West Virginia Julia Burton. "October Sky" book copies will be available for autographs at Borders Express. Also during the event, the winners of the elementary student essay contest (for which students wrote an essay about their favorite teacher) and the winners of the high school student poster contest (with the theme "Preparing for the Journey") will be announced.

The public is also welcome to attend the Freedom Bank Bottle Rocket Challenge featuring nine middle school teams at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 3, at Bridgeport High School.

Fairmont State's Robert C. Byrd National Aerospace Education Center will host the Freida J. Riley Teachers Award Luncheon at noon Tuesday, May 3. This event is by invitation only and is sponsored by the Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation and the Partnership for America's Future Inc.
