Alumnus Appointed to Serve on Fairmont State University Board of Governors

Jun 15, 2021

Fairmont State University alumnus and Bridgeport native, Jason Henderson, has been appointed to serve on the University’s Board of Governors beginning July 1. Henderson currently serves as the Chief Financial Officer at Energy Transportation in Clarksburg.

Henderson aspired to become a professional pyrotechnician from a young age, and embarked on his career path by enrolling as a student at Fairmont State University. However, Henderson’s life was forever changed in 2007 following a severe accident while mixing chemicals, causing an explosion and resulting in the amputation of both hands and loss of sight in his right eye.

“My strong desire to give back is due to the significant role in not only education, but rehabilitation that Fairmont State University played in my life,” Henderson said.

He and his mother explored accessibility services available at Fairmont State during Henderson’s transition from critical care to rehabilitation, allowing for him to complete his undergraduate degree in Business Administration.

“As an alumnus, Jason knows better than anyone the transformative impact a Fairmont State education can provide,” said Mirta M. Martin, Fairmont State University President. “He is such a dear member of the Falcon Family, and carries our sense of community and service deep in his Falcon heart. He will be an invaluable voice on the Board.”

Upon receiving his bachelor’s degree from Fairmont State, Henderson began the pursuit of continuing his education at West Virginia University, completing a Master’s of Business Administration in 2012.

Henderson began his tenure with Energy Transportation in 2016, and has since assisted to guide the organization and facilitate the growth from a startup into one of the region’s premier oil and gas support companies. In addition to serving as the CFO of Energy Transportation, Henderson is the principal owner of Energy Resource Group, LLC (ERG). ERG is a local service provider of environmental containments and water storage tanks.

“Jason is a true inspiration and an asset to our communities,” said David Goldberg, Fairmont State University Board of Governors Chairman. “We are honored to welcome him back home to Fairmont State and thrilled to serve alongside him. I look forward to his contributions to our Board and Institution throughout his term. We appreciate the appointment of such a gentleman by Governor Justice and the Senate to add to the expertise and perspective of the Board of Governors.”

Henderson also serves as an advocate for pyrotechnic safety, spending time volunteering at local schools sharing his story and participating in public awareness campaigns aimed to educate students on the dangers of homemade explosives. In 2011, Henderson was awarded the U.S. Attorney Award for outstanding service to the community.

“Fairmont State University holds a very special place in my heart. It was the conduit that provided a path to the place I dreamed of. It’s an honor to give back in a meaningful way to my alma mater,” Henderson added.
