Dominion WV State Science & Engineering Fair Winners Announced

Apr 21, 2015

Fairmont State University’s College of Science and Technology hosted the Dominion West Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair on March 28. Sixty-five high school students from 19 schools in West Virginia participated in the day focused on celebrating student research in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Support for the day came in numerous forms: judges representing both Fairmont State and West Virginia University faculty and Dominion; engaging activity stations from FSU student groups, NASA IV&V Facility Educator Resource Center, Space Public Outreach Team, WVU Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and WVU Next Generation Forensic Science Initiative; and financial contributions from generous sponsors Dominion (title), WVHTC Foundation (premium), West Virginia NASA Space Grant (premium) and the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh (friend of fair).

The top two projects from the fair will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the 2016 INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh in May. The grand prize winner was Anisha Valluri from Cabell Midland High School with her project titled “3D Tumor Model for Testing Anticancer Drugs.” The first runner up was Robert Phillips of Musselman High School with his project titled “King of the Ant Hill: A Resilience Study.” Valluri and Phillips will have the honor of representing the state this year.

The second runner up was Noah Morrison of Huntington High School with “Exploration of Harmonics of Plastic Steam Whistles.” The third runner up was Robert Barrat of Jefferson High School with “Coding and Academic Search Engine.” The fourth runner up was Aarohi Srivastava of Morgantown High School with “Object Detection and 3D Positioning Using Two Cameras.”
