College of Science and Technology Honors Academic Achievement

The Fairmont State University College of Science and Technology honored students for their academic achievement at the 2017 Academic Awards Celebration on May 3.

Dr. Don Trisel is Dean of the College of Science and Technology. Philip Freeman, AIA, NCARB is Chair of the Department of Architecture + Graphics; Dr. Steven Roof is Chair of the Department of Biology, Chemistry and Geoscience; Dr. Mahmood Hossain is Chair of the Department of Computer Science, Math and Physics; Hugh Costello, P.E. is Chair of the Department of Technology.

“The College of Science and Technology is very appreciative of the outstanding faculty and staff who support student learning and academic achievement. In the College, students experience the benefit of learning from exceptional faculty members that are among the most accomplished scholars and teachers in their respective fields. It has been our privilege to have taught and mentored the students being honored,” said Dr. Don Trisel.

During the event, Dr. Christina Lavorata, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, presented remarks and Jessica Sell gave greetings on behalf of the Fairmont State Foundation. College of Science and Technology faculty presented scholarships and awards to students.

Erin Taylor of Martinsburg was named the Outstanding Senior in Architecture. A 2012 graduate of Martinsburg High School, she is the daughter of Ed and Suzanne Taylor. A senior Architecture major, she has been president and vice president of the American Institute of Architecture Students, has worked for the Community Design Assistance Center, has been an Architecture intern on campus with the Physical Plant, is a past recipient of the Ted Shriver Scholarship and has been on the Dean’s List and President’s List.

Athena Sayrie of Fairmont received the Ted A. and Catherine L. Shriver Scholarship in Memory of James R. Shriver. A 2013 graduate of John Marshall High School, she is the daughter of Kenneth Sayrie and Cristina Havlik. A junior Architecture major, she is a junior representative for the American Institute of Architecture Students and a member of the Softball Team.

Andrea Richmond was named Outstanding Senior in Graphic Design Technology. A 2012 graduate of Christian Heritage Homeschool, she is the daughter of Denny and Theresa Risner. She and her husband Josh reside in Clarksburg. A senior Graphic Design Technology major, she is a past recipient of the Bob Heffner Endowment for Outstanding Students in Graphics Technology.

Courtney Conley of Washington received the Bob Heffner Endowment for Outstanding Students in Graphics Technology. A 2015 graduate of Parkersburg South High School, she is the daughter of Jack and Teresa Conley. A sophomore Graphics Technology major, she is a member of the Honors Program and Chi Alpha and is yearbook editor.

Amanda Harper of Parsons received the Freshman Chemistry Award. A 2016 graduate of Tucker County High School, she is the daughter of Harold and Kimberly Harper. A freshman Chemistry major, she is a member of the American Chemical Society and is an America Counts math tutor.

William Johnston received the Dr. James E. Coleman and Dr. Elizabeth D. Swiger Endowed Chemistry Scholarship.

Jennifer Perkins was named Outstanding Senior in Biology.

Rachel VanOsdol of Fairmont received the William C. Ruoff Outstanding Senior in Chemistry Award and the Eleanor M. Ford Outstanding Senior Award. She was homeschooled and earned her high school degree in 2013. She is the daughter of John and Laura VanOsdol. A senior Chemistry major, she is a past recipient of the Coleman and Swiger Endowed Scholarship and has been a peer mentor. She is a past winner of the Dean’s Choice: Outstanding Junior in BCG award.

Kayla Coleman of East Liverpool, Ohio, was named Outstanding Senior in Forensics. A 2013 graduate of Beaver Local High School, she is the daughter of Michelle Coleman. A senior Forensics major, she worked in the Financial Aid Office and as a tutor. She has been on the Dean’s List and the President’s List.

Hannah Vasicek was named Outstanding Senior in Science Education.

Stephanie Barton received the Valeria S. Kullman, MD Scholarship.

Gabi Mascaro of Fairmont received the Vincent and Catherine Sansalone Scholarship. A 2014 graduate of Fairmont Senior High School, she is the daughter of Pat and Tina Mascaro. A junior Biology major, she is a member of the Women’s Soccer Team, is a peer mentor and has been on the Dean’s List and the President’s List.

Carl Wahler received the Ernest Frye Outstanding Student in Computer Science Award.

Benjamin Daily was named Outstanding Senior in Computer Science.

Dylan Shannon was named Outstanding Senior in Computer Security.

Trevor Fancher received the James A. LaRue Mathematics Award.

Faith Stout of Clarksburg received the A. Joyce H. Coleman Memorial Scholarship. A 2014 graduate of South Harrison High School, she is a junior Elementary Education major with a concentration in Math 5-9 and is a member of the Honors Program.

Tyler Lucas was named Outstanding Senior in Aviation.

Michael Daetwyler of Shinnston was named Outstanding Senior in Civil Engineering Technology. A 2013 graduate of Grafton High School, he is the son of William and Susan Daetwyler. A senior Civil Engineering Technology major, he is a recipient of the CAWV Scholarship.

David Klug of Cameron was named Outstanding Senior in Electronics Engineering Technology. A 2013 graduate of Cameron High School, he is the son of Pat Klug and Patricia Kulavik and is engaged to Samantha Fitzsimmons. A senior Electronics and Mechanical Engineering Technology major, he is a member of the SAE Baja Team and RockSat.

Shawn Johnson was named Outstanding Senior in Mechanical Engineering Technology.

Sydney Bock was named Outstanding Senior in Occupational Safety.

Paige Menendez of Fairmont received the Dr. Wm. Mark Hart Engineering Technology Scholarship. A 2012 graduate of North Marion High School, she is the daughter of David Menendez. She is a junior Electronics Engineering Technology major.

Garrett Dailey of Parkersburg received the Dr. Wm. Mark Hart Engineering Technology Scholarship. A 2014 graduate of Parkersburg South High School, he is the son of Brian and Misha Dailey. A junior Occupational Safety major, he is a member of the Student Government Association.

Caleb Landis of Hampshire County received the Dr. Wm. Mark Hart Engineering Technology Scholarship. A 2013 graduate of Hampshire High School, he is the son of Tim and Joyce Landis. A junior Civil Engineering Technology major, he is a member of the ASCE Concrete Canoe Team.

Marshall Moats of Grafton received the Collier and Golden Family Scholarship. A 2013 Grafton High School graduate, he is the son of Edward and Della Sue Moats. A senior Mechanical Engineering Technology major, he is a member of Pi Theta Kappa.

Jessie Gunnoe received the Ruby and Harold Haflin Endowed Scholarship. A 2009 graduate of Van Jr. Sr. High School, he is the son of Maria Gunnoe. He and his wife Kayla and their children Aiden and Ryder reside in Bridgeport. He is a junior Electronics Engineering Technology major.

Ben Costello of Fairmont received the Daniel Dicken Memorial Scholarship and the Matthew S. DeVito Memorial Scholarship. A 2015 graduate of East Fairmont High School, he is the son of Hugh and Sandra Costello. A sophomore Civil Engineering Technology major, he is ASCE vice president and member of the Concrete Canoe Team.

Megan Talbott of Lost Creek received the Consol, Inc. Scholarship and the Glenn and Elsie Toothman Endowed Scholarship. A 2015 graduate of South Harrison High School, she is the daughter of Chris and Sharon Talbott. A sophomore Mechanical Engineering Technology major, she is a member of the SAE Baja Team and ASME.

Jessica Furda of Wintersville, Ohio, received The Walter F. Phillips, Jr. Endowed Scholarship Fund and was named Dean’s Choice: Outstanding Junior in ET. A 2014 graduate of Indian Creek High School, she is the daughter of Mike and June Furda. A junior Mechanical Engineering Technology major, she is captain of the Volleyball Team, president of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and was named to the MEC All-Academic Team in 2016 and 2017.

Tyler Groves of Bruceton Mills was named Dean’s Choice: The Spirit of SciTech. A 2013 graduate of Preston High School, he is the son of Brad and Sherry Groves. A senior Biology major, he is a peer mentor and was named Outstanding Senior in Biology in 2016. He has been accepted to the WVSOM Class of 2021.

Allison Moore of Fairmont was named Dean’s Choice: Outstanding Junior in BCG. A 2015 graduate of East Fairmont High School, she is the daughter of Henry and Jane Moore. A junior Chemistry major, she is vice president of the Solar Army club and a member of the American Chemical Society.

Randi Tinney of Jane Lew received the Eleanor M. Ford Outstanding Junior Endowed Scholarship. A 2011 graduate of South Harrison High School, she is the daughter of Butch and Beth Meahl. A sophomore Computer Science and Math major, she is secretary of the Robotics Club.
