Turley Student Services Center Puts Focus on Student Success

Jun 17, 2013

This fall, new Fairmont State University students and those returning to campus will be able to find many of the support services they need to succeed in one convenient place – the Turley Student Services Center.

Located between Hardway Hall and Wallman Hall, the building soon to be known as the Turley Student Services Center was originally called the Student Center. Built in 1959, the building was renamed for George H. Turley in 1980. Turley served for 30 years as an English and speech faculty member at Fairmont State and as Dean of Men; he was advisor to the Student Government for 24 years. After an extensive renovation project over the past year, the building will retain its focus on students. The opening of the newly renovated Turley Student Services Center will be celebrated in August with several special events. The community is asked to stay tuned for details.

“We are extremely excited about the renovations to the Turley Center. Providing excellent service to students is the first priority for the new facility. As the Turley Student Services Center, the building will provide a central location and a ‘one-stop shop’ for services our students need and use the most. The Center will assist efforts to attract new students, retain students and keep them on the right academic path to graduation,” said Kaye Widney, Vice President for Student Services.

The first floor of the Turley Student Services Center will house the Office of Admissions and Recruitment, serving as the new welcome area for prospective students and their families who are visiting campus throughout the year. The second floor will feature the offices of Career Services/Student Employment/Center for Civic Engagement, International Students, Multicultural Affairs, Retention/Orientation and the Honors Program Center. The third floor will provide space for the high-traffic Enrollment Services, which includes Financial Aid and Scholarships, On-Campus Housing/Residential Life, Processing Application, Registrar, Student Accounts, Transcript Requests and Veterans Services. Also located on the third floor will be the Advising Center/RBA Program, Graduation Audits, Counseling and Disability Services, as well as the office for the Vice President for Student Services.

To make the transition to the renovated facility possible, many office moves are taking place during the months of June and July. Office phone numbers will not change during this transition. To view a list of phone numbers, visit www.fairmontstate.edu/studentservices. During this time, it is recommended that those visiting offices relocating to the Turley Student Services Center should call faculty or staff members to confirm current locations prior to visiting those offices.

During the first week of July, the Financial Aid Office, Registrar’s Office, Student Accounts, On-Campus Housing, Application Processing and the front counter of Student Services, which handles services such as transcript requests, parking permits and more, will be moving from Hardway Hall to their new space in the Turley Student Services Center.

“We want to make sure our students, faculty, staff and the community are aware that as part of the Turley Student Services Center move-in, Enrollment Services will be closed the first week of July due to limited access to student level information,” Widney said.

“We apologize in advance for any inconvenience the relocation of offices will create during the summer, but it is necessary to allow the grand opening of the newly renovated facility in the fall. We hope the campus community and the greater community will join us to celebrate the opening of the Turley Student Services Center in August.”
