Mills Group Awards Scholarships to Two Architecture Students

Nov 13, 2014

Two Fairmont State University Architecture students have been awarded scholarships created by a local architect.

The Mills Group, an architecture firm based in Morgantown, developed two scholarship opportunities for aspiring architects by providing memberships to the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) program. The national organization is dedicated to inspiring, educating and providing networking opportunities for students interested in the building design profession.

Michael Mills, AIA, established the first scholarship in honor of his grandfather, Clayton “Bud” Mills, for a student interested in residential architecture. The second scholarship memorializes his great aunt Grace Blossom and is reserved for a student interested in historic architecture. Each scholarship will provide one year’s membership fee to the local and national AIAS chapters.

Grant Delancy of St. Mary’s received the Clayton “Bud” Mills Scholarship, and Shaun Adams of Grantsville, Md., was presented with the Blossom Scholarship. Both students are sophomore Architecture majors at FSU.

“These two students represent the next generation of architects and hopefully will build on the principles of the past and preserve the future of West Virginia,” Mills said. “Leadership in the practice of architecture is strengthened by going beyond the classroom and understanding what it takes to be successful in practice. My grandfather Mills taught me that I could take a blank sheet of paper, craft a vision and make it reality with planning and hard work. My Great Aunt Grace’s appreciation of history further inspired me to respect the importance of preserving the past.”

Mills founded Mills Group in 2005 and since that time maintained a clear focus on the design of new structures which encompass the rich architectural character of the past. The firm is diligent in understanding the client’s spatial needs, design goals and budget. Mills Group is committed to a quality end-product derived from experience, diligence and collaboration.
