Turley Student Services Center Dedication Ceremony Aug. 1

Jul 31, 2013

A dedication ceremony on Thursday, Aug. 1, will celebrate the opening of the newly renovated Fairmont State University Turley Student Services Center on the main campus.

The event, which is open to the public, will take place in the building’s third floor lobby and the new main area for the Office of Enrollment Services at about 9 a.m., following the United Way of Marion County Campaign Kick-Off breakfast also taking place on campus. A ribbon-cutting is planned, and light refreshments will be served. Students will be on hand to act as tour guides for those who attend the ceremony and would like to tour the facility.

Other special events are planned to help acclimate the campus community to the new office locations in the building:

  • Faculty and staff are invited to attend a Turley Student Services Center Open House from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14.
  • Fairmont State and Pierpont Community & Technical College students are invited to stop by during the first week of school beginning Monday, Aug. 19, to tour the new facility and learn about available services.

“The building has been open for several weeks, and we are extremely excited about the renovations to the Turley Center. Providing excellent service to students is the first priority for the new facility. As the Turley Student Services Center, the building provides a central location and a ‘one-stop shop’ for services our students need and use the most. The Center will assist efforts to attract new students, retain students and keep them on the right academic path to graduation,” said Kaye Widney, Vice President for Student Services.

Located between Hardway Hall and Wallman Hall, the building now known as the Turley Student Services Center was originally called the Student Center. Built in 1959, the building was renamed for George H. Turley in 1980. Turley served for 30 years as an English and speech faculty member at Fairmont State and as Dean of Men; he was advisor to the Student Government for 24 years. After an extensive renovation project over the past year, the building will retain its focus on students.

The first floor of the Turley Student Services Center houses the Office of Admissions and Recruitment, serving as the new welcome area for prospective students and their families who are visiting campus throughout the year. The second floor features the Career Development Center, including Career Services, Student Employment and the Center for Civic Engagement; the Honors Program Center; International Student Services; Multicultural Affairs; and the Retention/Orientation Office. The third floor provides space for the high-traffic Enrollment Services, which includes Financial Aid and Scholarships, On-Campus Housing/Residential Life, Application Processing, Registrar, Student Accounts, Transcript Requests and Veterans Services. Also located on the third floor are the Advising Center/RBA Program, Graduation Audits, Counseling and Disability Services, as well as the office for the Vice President for Student Services.
