Fairmont State Honors Graduates During Fall Commencement Ceremonies

Nov 22, 2021

More than 180 graduates were honored as part of Fairmont State University’s 152nd Commencement on Saturday, November 20. The University celebrated the achievements of its newest alumni from all of its five colleges during two ceremonies taking place in the Feaster Center.

President, Dr. Mirta M. Martin praised Falcon graduates not only for their extraordinary achievements, but also for their resilience demonstrated throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

“You were forged through the crucible of a global event, and you have grown,” said Fairmont State University President, Mirta M. Martin. “You adapted to shifting circumstances, sometimes daily. You acquired new skills – you learned resiliency and learned how to lean into your innate tenacity.”

West Virginia Auditor, John B. “JB” McCuskey joined the University’s platform party providing the keynote address at each of the ceremonies.

“Today, you begin a life that will be full of leadership, purpose and passion,” he told the graduates before him.

McCuskey explained that one of his greatest passions lies in finding betterment for his home state of West Virginia, and concluded his speech with a plea to the Falcon alumni who would soon go on to find their places in the world, whether within the state’s borders or beyond them.

“If you must go, go with purpose and remember us fondly. Use the values of this place to make everyone around you and your new world better,” he said. “But if you choose to stay, remember who you are. Remember that you have the power to change the world of many who are suffering. You have the power to build something that is ours – a place that remains true to our values but is designed to maximize our potential.”
