Fairmont State University to Remember September 11 with Moment of Silence

Ahead of the 20th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, representatives from Fairmont State University’s Office of Veteran Services, Office of Student Life and Student Government Association partnered to place American flags on campus in honor and remembrance of the first responders and thousands of victims involved in the attacks. 

“September 11 is a day that transformed America,” said Fairmont State University President, Mirta M. Martin. “It’s not just a day of sorrow, but a day of true heroism in which we saw so many first responders risk their lives to save others. I hope that now, 20 years later, as we remember that day, that this country is brought back together with the same heroism, desire to be united and inspiration to become, again, one great United States.”  

For Samuel Price, a marine who now serves his fellow military members as a financial aid counselor within the University’s Office of Veteran Services, the anniversary of the attacks serves as a way to reflect and pay respect to those who lost their lives.   

“I was a freshman in high school when this happened, and I saw the attacks in real time while I was at school,” said Price. “That was a very difficult day. So, as we commemorate Patriot Day, the significance of placing these flags is so we can remember the sacrifice of those individuals who weren’t really given a choice of whether they wanted to sacrifice themselves or not.”  

The campus community is invited to gather around the bell in the Education Quad on campus at 10 a.m. Saturday to observe a moment of silence. 

“Tomorrow marks 20 years since the entire world stood still,” said Student Government Association President, Zach Taylor. “We hope that everyone comes out in remembrance.”
