Fairmont State SGA to Deliver Gifts and Food Donations to Local Schools
Members of Fairmont State University’s Student Government Association (SGA) are making the holidays brighter for area students and their families.
Earlier this fall, SGA announced its inaugural Christmas with a Falcon program in partnership with Marion County Schools. Through generous monetary gifts from local organizations and community members, plus SGA’s promise to match half of all donations made, approximately $13,000 was raised to purchase Christmas gifts for underprivileged students at 10 of Marion County’s elementary schools. Zach Taylor, SGA Faculty Senate Representative, said around 130 students will benefit from the fundraiser.
“We hope this program becomes a staple within the community,” Taylor said. “We want this to be something families can look forward to and for them to know that if they’re ever worried about the holidays, we are here to take care of them.”
This week, Fairmont State SGA purchased and wrapped gifts, ranging from clothing, shoes and toys to kitchen and cleaning items for the students and their families. The gifts will be distributed to area schools on Monday, December 14.
Taylor said he is thrilled with the support the Christmas with a Falcon program received and that he hopes it continues for years to come.
“I’m really proud of this initiative,” Taylor said. “This is a great way for the University to get involved and it’s especially good for our community. Everyone – from the schools to our donors -- was so receptive to the idea and we hope to keep it going for a long time.”
In addition, the monetary donations further allowed SGA to contribute items to internal food drives at Fairview and Pleasant Valley elementary schools. Those items are scheduled to be delivered Friday, December 11.
"I am so very grateful and deeply humbled by the selfless efforts and generosity demonstrated this holiday season,” said Mirta M. Martin, Fairmont State University President. “Our Student Government Association exemplifies the true spirit of the Falcon Family, as they have successfully served their mission to support our community and provide for those who may not be able to enjoy the holidays. These contributions will have an immediate and profound impact and will surely brighten Christmas for many.”
