Fairmont State Nursing Professor awarded Woman of Enduring Spirit

Ellen Condron, Fairmont State University associate professor of nursing, was recently awarded the Woman of Enduring Spirit by the Clarksburg League for Service.

In 2004, the Clarksburg League for Service was looking for a way to celebrate women in the community, and in the league, who not only volunteer but to recognize their efforts to better our community. 

This year they chose Condron as the only recipient, where in other years they have recognized several. She joined the Clarksburg League for Service in 1980, where she is a lifetime member and a past president. 

Condron has been teaching at the University since 1990 and is also a Family Nurse Pracitioner. She has taught a beginning Nursing course, Pediatric Nursing and Psychiatric Nursing.  Today she teaches psychiatric nursing, which she enjoys teaching because it makes her students more aware of mental illness.  She feels that people with mental illness and the homeless population are underserved in the community, and she wants to complete her final years in teaching working to try to help those people.  Condron has helped her students organize food and clothing drives.  Her students wanted to do something to help children.  They came together to raise some different items for children.

Condron initiated and organized the community conversations on substance abuse which are ongoing.  They are exploring the problems in the schools because parents are involved in opiods and heroin. Condron met with others in the area to look at prevention, intervention, treatment and recovery. These community conversations are to help educate the community, law enforcement, lawmakers, parents, teachers and students.  They want to present accurate information about addition and mental illness.

She enjoys, traveling, reading and knitting in her spare time.
