West Virginia Symphony Orchestra Announces November 14 Concert
The Fairmont State University Department of Music is excited to announce the return of the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra (WVSO) on Wednesday, November 14, at 7:30p.m. in Colebank Hall on the Fairmont State University main campus. Tickets go on sale on Monday October 29thand are available through the Fairmont State Box Office, on the 4th floor of Wallman Hall, or by calling 304-367-4240.
Led by conductor Lawrence Loh, the concert will feature works by Mikhail Glinka, Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Georges Bizet, and Antonin Dvorak. Glinka’s “Ruslan and Ludmilla Overture” will entertain audience members as the orchestra musically evoke a dramatic love story. “Waltz of the Flowers” by Tchaikovsky is well-known and well-loved. Appearing in the final dance of the “Nutcracker”, audience members will instantly recognize this famous piece and its impressive and unmatched orchestral energy. “Carmen Suite No. 1” a popular orchestral suite by Bizet, blends tense moments, tragedy, and colorful rhythms . And finally, Dvorak’s “Symphony No. 9” is his most popular composition. Nicknamed, “From the New World”, Dvorak wrote this classical piece during his time in the United States (during the 1890’s) and the piece draws upon the sounds of African American spirituals, Native American music, and American folk melodies.
“This concert is not to be missed,” says Brian F. Wright, Assistant Professor of Music at Fairmont State. “It is a wonderful opportunity to hear some of the most dramatic and beloved orchestral music of the 19thcentury performed live by a professional symphony orchestra.”
Maestro Lawrence Loh is the WVSO’s tenth Music Director, having been awarded the position starting in the 2017-2018 season. He is also currently the Music Director of Symphoria (Syracuse, NY). Loh is active as a guest conductor, both in the U.S. and abroad including engagements with the Boston Pops (Tanglewood); Seattle Symphony; Buffalo Philharmonic and the Cathedral Choral Society at the Washington National Cathedral. Recent engagements include the National (Washington D.C.), Indianapolis, Tacoma, Naples, Knoxville, Florida, Dallas, El Paso, San Luis Obispo, Edmonton, Colorado, Charleston (SC), Detroit, Malaysia, Daejeon (South Korea), and Greater Bridgeport Orchestras.
