Pop Art: Intersections between Popular, Folk and Classical music comes to Fairmont
The Fairmont State University Department of Music is proud to present international performing artist, Dr. Ross Ahlhorn at the First Presbyterian Church in Fairmont, WV on Friday, September 14th, at 7:30 p.m. Mr. Ahlhorn will present a trumpet recital titled, “Pop Art: Intersections Between Popular, Folk, and Classical Music”, which will feature works inspired by, or directly influenced by, folk and popular music. The event is free and open to the public.
“Pop Art: Intersections Between Popular, Folk, and Classical Music” provides the audience a chance to experience and be inspired by many genres of music assembled into one show. Dr. Ahlhorn will be performing pieces arranged for trumpet and piano by Gershwin, Gottschalk, and de Falla among many others. Dr. Ahlhorn has had many accomplishments over recent years including being a first prize winner in the Golden Classical International Music Competition and the Grand Prize Virtuoso International Competition. Furthermore, Dr. Ahlhorn was invited to perform solo at the Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall and the Wiener Saal at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. This is the community’s chance to experience and support an international performing artist!
In addition to the aforementioned accomplishments, Dr. Ahlhorn currently holds the position of Principal Trumpet with the Waynesboro Symphony. Dr. Ahlhorn is on faculty at James Madison University, Washington and Lee University, and Southern Virginia University, where he teaches applied trumpet, applied horn, and brass technique courses for Music Education majors. When Dr. Ahlhorn is not teaching, he maintains an active freelance presence in the Shenandoah Valley and Central Virginia region. His most recent performances include performing with the acclaimed Staunton Music Festival Orchestra in Staunton, Virginia, the Madison Brass, the Charlottesville Symphony Orchestra, the Massanutten Brass Band, and the Shenandoah-University Symphony Orchestra in Lexington, Virginia. As part of his diverse career, Dr. Ahlhorn has also performed as assistant solo cornetist in the Salt River Brass, both principal and second trumpet in the Musica Nova Orchestra of Scottsdale, Arizona. Other notable performances include soloist and principal orchestral roles at the Sulzbach-Rosenberg International Music Festival in Sulzbach-Rosenberg, Germany, 2nd trumpet with Orchestra Next, the orchestra in residence with the Eugene Ballet (Oregon), and the 2013 and 2017 International Trumpet Guild Annual Conferences.
