Marion County Preparedness Expo comes to campus

On Saturday, September 29, the Marion County Preparedness Expo will be held from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the Fairmont State University Falcon Center. This free event is sponsored by the Marion County Health Department, Marion County Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management and the Greater Fairmont Council of Churches.

“Being prepared for future situations and needs, especially the unexpected such as loss of home, job, or available resources, is the focus of the Preparedness Expo,” said event organizer Galen Hansen. “At such times of emergency, we must first be able to rely on ourselves to meet our basic needs and those of our family and neighbors.  With those needs met, we can then become active participants in the recovery process instead of being the one requiring the assistance.  Government help is usually unavailable or a long-time coming during the first several days of most emergencies.”

More than fifty exhibits and workshops will be available to attendees of this free event. Exhibits will include first aid, food storage, survival techniques, self-defense, fire protection, financial and mental health, and much more. Attendees are sure to learn ways to keep themselves and their family safe and prepared for the future.

“Preparation for natural disasters, power outages, fire, car trouble, cell phone and communication outages, 72-hour kits, preparation for losing and finding or changing jobs, child and pet care, end-of-life care, special needs care, elderly health issues such as hearing or sight loss, will all be addressed at our Expo. We hope the community will come out and join us for this special event.”
