In the Midst of Paintings and Drawings by Joel T. Dugan

Sep 26, 2018

The Fairmont State University Department of Art is excited to announce the solo exhibition “In The Midst Of” by Joel T. Dugan in the J.D. Brooks Gallery at Fairmont State University.

The show is currently on display from September 17 through October 12 with the artist talk and reception taking place Thursday, September 27th at 3:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public and community.

Joel T. Dugan received his Bachelor of Fine Art from The College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan in 2002. In 2011, Joel completed his MFA at The Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Art at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.  Joel is an accomplished visual artist and works primarily as a painter. He has an active national and international exhibition record of over 122 solo and group exhibitions. In addition, Joel has also completed many public art commissions and various corporate commissions for institutions such as, The Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Detroit Athletic Club, Fort Hays State University, and the State of Michigan.

Joel is drawn to artists that document the human condition. He draws inspiration for his work from his life experiences. “My paintings speak of experiences. They are a snapshot in time that evokes fear, nostalgia, an unpleasant awareness, or just a moment of unspoken understanding. These events take place in the public and private realms of our lives, and we each interpret them in our consciousness. I strive to capture the layers of one’s self-awareness, integrating conscious outlooks with subconscious thoughts and dreams,” said artist Joel T. Dugan.

Joel also works to cultivate community interest in public art and community projects throughout the regions he has called home. “The imagery in my paintings is achieved through the act of applying paint to the canvas. No image is premeditated or realized before its conception. This body of work is autobiographical and is very much influenced by my role as a father, son, and husband, looking both forward and backward through the eyes of my loved ones. As I contemplate my role through life's transitions, the act of being present seems to be the most fulfilling,” he said.

The J.D. Brooks Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and there will be an opening reception and gallery talk on Thursday, September 27thstarting at 3:30 p.m. The community and media are invited to attend this free event. The show is currently on display in the J.D. Brooks Gallery located in Wallman Hall on the campus of Fairmont State from September 17 through October 12, 2018.
