Event raises awareness and funds for cancer organization

The Fairmont State women's basketball team will be shooting free throws during a charity event to raise awareness for the Cancer for College organization for the fourth-consecutive year. The event will begin on Friday, Sept. 21 starting at 6 p.m. at the Feaster Center on the campus of Fairmont State University and will run through Saturday, Sept. 22 at 6 a.m.

The 2018-19 Lady Falcon basketball team will take part in the charity event by shooting free throws for 12 hours.

"It is an absolute privilege for our women's basketball program to hold this event for a fourth time to raise awareness for such a great organization and a worthy cause," said Fairmont State head women's basketball coach, Steve McDonald. "We all know someone that has battled cancer and for those who are fortunate enough to survive, it is great to have an organization that is giving many of them the opportunity to attend college and further their education.

"We would also encourage anyone that would like to make a donation to the organization to visit their website or stop by the event on Sept. 21 and 22, where the women's basketball team will be accepting donations for the organization."

Members of the community are invited to join the Fairmont State women's basketball team and shoot free throws during the duration of the 12 hours of free throws on Sept. 21 through Sept. 22. All guest shooters are asked to make a small donation to Cancer for College during the event.

About Cancer for College

Since 1994,Cancer for College has been providing college Scholarships to Cancer Survivors. The charity was founded in 1994 by two-time cancer survivor and double amputee, Craig Pollard, while in his senior year at the University of Southern California Business School. For his senior project, Craig wrote a business plan on a charity which would provide financial aid to cancer survivors who aspired to attend college. That first year, Craig gathered some fraternity brothers and family friends to play golf and barbeque in his backyard, where they awarded one $500 scholarship. Twenty years later, Craig's vision has become a reality, as Cancer for College has been able to award over $2.5 million and more than 1,100 college scholarships to cancer survivors from around the country.

Now with fundraising events in California, North Carolina, and Washington, Cancer for College continues to expand and build upon its humble beginnings. This year, the charity received over 1,000 applications from deserving young cancer survivors looking for financial assistance as they pursue their dreams of a college education.
