Colors of the Solo Flute in Song and Dance
The Fairmont State University Department of Music is proud to present recording artist and international performer, Dr. Andrea Kapell Loewy, at the Folk Life Center on the campus of Fairmont State on Wednesday, October 3rd, at 7:30 p.m. Dr. Loewy will present a solo flute recital titled, “Colors of the Solo Flute in Song and Dance.” The event is free and open to the public.
“Colors of the Solo Flute in Song and Dance” will provide audience members the chance to experience the magical sound of the solo flute in one powerful evening of performances. Audience members will hear selected works by classical artists such as, Claude Debussy, Arthur Honegger, Jacques Ibert, and many more. Each selection will be accompanied by brief remarks from Dr. Loewy about the composer and musical style.
A well-known recording artist and performer, Dr. Loewy earned a Bachelor of Music from Eastman School of Music, Master of Music from Emporia State University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Memphis. Her teachers have included Joseph Mariano, Harold Bennett, John Heiss, Samuel Baron, Phillip Kaplan, and Bruce Erskine. In addition, Dr. Lowey has played with the Mid-America Woodwind Quintet and was Co-Principal Flutist of the Orchestra of the State of Mexico. She has accepted the honor for Distinguished Professor Award and holds the Heymann II Endowed Professorship in Music at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
In addition to her impeccable teaching honors, she is Principal Flute of the Acadiana Symphony, and has played several concertos with the orchestra, including Mozart's “Flute and Harp Concerto”, Faure's “Fantaisie, Zwilich's Concerto”, Godard’s “Suite op. 116”, J. S. Bach's “Brandenburg Concerti #2 and #5”, J. S. Bach’s “Suite in B Minor”, and Vivaldi’s “Il Cardellino”. In addition, she has performed both chamber and solo works at several National Flute Conventions. As a recording artist, she released her first album with Centaur Records titled, “Apparitions and Whimsies” which featured twentieth century compositions for flute. She has presented concerts and classes both at the national level at universities and touring venues and internationally in China where she has performed and taught on five separate concert tours during the past several years. She also recently won the creative Sparks Grant from Acadiana Arts Council to study Feldenkrais technique in NYC.
