Feb 21, 2018

Fairmont State University and the Department of Athletics will be holding a press conference on Thursday afternoon at 12 p.m. to celebrate the women’s swim team’s 2018 Mountain East Conference swimming championship, the first conference championship in program history.

The event will take place on Thursday, February 22 at 12 p.m. on the third floor of the Fairmont State Falcon Center (near the elevator and cafeteria). All local media outlets are encouraged to attend, and one-on-one interviews will be available following the press conference.

The Fairmont State women were crowned the first-ever MEC women's swimming champions after being the top Mountain East program in the final meet standings. The Falcons finished with 820.50 points in the team standings, just a half a point ahead of West Virginia Wesleyan.

In the final MEC men’s standings, the Falcons finished as runner-up behind West Virginia Wesleyan with 862 points. West Virginia Wesleyan captured the MEC men’s title.

Individually, Courtney Deem earned Women’s Swimmer of the Meet honors for her efforts during the four-day event, winning the 1,000 free, 500 free, 200 free, and finishing second in the 100 free.

Marlena Dudek also took first place in a pair of individual events, including the 100 breaststroke on Friday, and 200 breaststroke on Saturday.

The Fairmont State men were paced over the weekend by a pair of first-place finishes. Alex Quintao was the first to touch the wall in the 100 free, and Fairmont State’s men’s 400 free relay team of John Paul Zimcosky, Arthur Brilhante, Shawn Gee and Quintao also took first place on Saturday evening.

During the four-day GMAC/MEC Swimming Championships, the Falcons totaled seven individual event championships, five NCAA B-cut times, set nine school records and had 39 top-eight finishes.
