Bowen to Exhibit in Brooks Gallery
The Fairmont State University Department of Art is excited to announce the solo exhibition, “Mike Bowen Recent Works” by Mike Bowen in the J.D. Brooks Gallery at Fairmont State University. The show opens Tuesday, January 16 and will stay on display until Thursday, February 8th.
Bowen, a native of Huntington, West Virginia, is heavily influenced by the natural countryside that surrounds the industrial landscape of Huntington. His recent ceramic work deals with industrial objects and landscapes and the wear and deterioration they go through during their life. “While these are not deliberate representations of specific objects or tools, my vessels and sculptures contain elements and textures, which give them the feel of machine parts,” said artist Mike Bowen. “Through all of these choices, I memorialize objects that have served a long life of usefulness, but have been discarded and left to the elements and time,” he said.
"We are excited to have a ceramicist of Mike's caliber show his work and share his craft with our campus community, and we encourage the public to come and see his dynamic exhibition this winter,” said Jeremy Entwistle, Gallery Director and Sculpture Coordinator at Fairmont State.
Mike Bowen is a native of Huntington, WV and earned his BFA in 2004 from Marshall University. Later, he went to The University of South Carolina where he earned an MFA in ceramics and sculpture in 2010. After graduate school, he moved back to Huntington and began teaching at Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, OH, and more recently, at Marshall University. He maintains a home studio along with his wife Allison, son Benjamen, and three dogs.
The JD Brooks Gallery is open M-F 10am-3pm and the exhibition will run from January 16th through February 8th, with a closing reception and gallery talk at 5pm on February 8th. Please join us for this event, which is free and open to the public.
