Fairmont State University offers Majorettes scholarship

Jul 17, 2017

Hundreds of majorettes have come to Fairmont State University to participate in the 70th Drum Majorettes of America National Finals, which is taking place in the Joe Retton Arena of the Feaster Center through Wednesday.

Now the trip may be even more memorable for the participants of the organization’s championship round. Dr. Stephen B. Jones, FSU’s interim president, attended Drum Majorettes of America’s opening ceremonies Sunday afternoon and offered a $500 scholarship to any 2017 national finals participant.

It’s an offer that doesn’t have a fast-approaching expiration date, considering that some of the competitors are as young as 2.

“I’ve been impressed with the dedication, discipline and teamwork I’ve witnessed from these participants so far, and I feel like bringing in students with those kind of qualities would certainly be an addition to our campus,” Dr. Jones said. “This is our way of investing in the education of these future leaders and ensuring them there is a place here for them on this campus with likeminded individuals.”

The 400 participants in the national finals event range in age from 2 to 24 and hail from several Eastern states, including West Virginia, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. Events run through Wednesday evening, when the Majorette Queen of America 2018 will be crowned.
