FSU Students to Participate in Stream Cleanup Day

The City of Fairmont Utilities Stormwater Program will hold its sixth annual Stream Cleanup Day on Wednesday, April 12, in conjunction with the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection’s 2017 Make It Shine program. Fairmont State University Construction Manager Stephanie Slaubaugh and about 15 FSU students plan to participate.

Efforts of this event will be focused on the Hickman Run Drainage Basin area from May Brothers on Wabash Street to the Monongahela River. Volunteers will assist the City of Fairmont Utility employees, the Stormwater crews, Public Works crews and FSU in the removal of litter and debris from the drainage area where it will then be disposed of properly.

Fairmont’s West Virginia Make It Shine activities are part of a larger national effort, Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup, which is expected to involve about 3 million people. The 2016 WV Make It Shine statewide cleanup resulted in nearly 300,000 pounds of litter and debris collected by more than 4,000 volunteers. About 180 miles of stream and 2,400 acres of park land were cleaned.

The WV Make It Shine program is part of the Rehabilitation Environmental Action Plan, REAP, initiative under the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection. All of West Virginia’s volunteer-driven cleanup programs fall under REAP-The Next Generation.
