Regional Healthcare Foundation Donates $10,000 to Falcon Center Summer Day Camp

May 28, 2015

The Regional Healthcare Foundation, formerly the Fairmont General Hospital Foundation, presented a $10,000 donation to the Falcon Center Summer Day Camp at Fairmont State University on Thursday, May 28.

Dr. John Leon, Regional Healthcare Foundation Board Secretary, and Whitney Hatcher, Foundation Director, presented the donation to FSU President Maria Rose, Falcon Center Director Robin Yeager and Falcon Center Assistant Director Kevin Philyaw, who guides the operation of the camp.

“On behalf of the faculty, staff and administration of Fairmont State University, I want to formally thank the Regional Healthcare Foundation for their very generous donation of $10,000 to the Falcon Center Summer Day Camp,” Philyaw said. “Each year the Day Camp has gained a stronger presence on the University campus and looks to increase this presence with the collaboration of the Foundation and the addition of a scholarship program.”

In 2014 the Regional Healthcare Foundation conducted a community needs assessment, which identified obesity as a significant problem affecting the community. The goal of the Falcon Center Summer Day Camp is to provide children with a fun and safe environment, offering educational and recreational activities that help combat childhood obesity.

Hatcher said several members of the Foundation Board have children who have participated in the Summer Day Camp in the past and had great experiences. The Board wanted to find a way to expand the opportunity to participate in the camp to children from families who could not afford to send them. The Foundation donation will fund full one-week scholarships for children based on the regular day price of $145 per week.

The Falcon Center is working with the Marion County Board of Education to identify and notify children who qualify for the scholarships. For the summer of 2015, the Foundation will fund 64 scholarships. The plan is that scholarship offerings will increase each year to allow the camp to grow and to maintain the resources to provide a personalized, unique experience for each camper.

“With the help from supporters such as the Regional Healthcare Foundation, our team can continue to build upon our goal. We thank the Foundation for joining us in taking a stance against childhood obesity and for making the Day Camp a reality for so many area children,” Philyaw said.
