Department of Music to Host Presentation by Multimedia Artist
The Fairmont State University Department of Music will host a presentation by multimedia artist Dr. Brigid Burke at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 6, at the Wallman Hall auditorium.
The program for the concert will include new multimedia works and compositions realized by Marshall University faculty members Steven Hall and Mark Zanter with choreography/dance by Jessica Lynn Fox. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information, call (304) 367-4219.
Burke is the Edwards Distinguished Professor of the Arts at Marshall. MU’s School of Music and Theatre also will host a series of presentations, master classes and performances in April to feature Burke. Her residency will also include a performance at Tamarack in Beckley. She also will provide outreach to local schools and universities.
The Joan C. Edwards Distinguished Professors in the Arts Endowment provides financial support for this program. Additional support is provided by Marshall University’s College of Arts and Media, the School of Music and Theatre and the School of Art and Design.
Burke is an Australian composer, clarinet composer, clarinet soloist, performance artist, visual artist, filmmaker, video-maker and educator. She has performed and toured extensively nationally and internationally. Burke has a Ph.D. from UTAS University of Tasmania and a Master of Music in Composition from Melbourne University.
Her involvement in many audiovisual performances has led her to integrate Bb/Bass clarinet, real-time computer sound, live visuals and theatre in her performances to create innovative performances. Her main focus is integrating musical ideas with a combination of different media. Each component of media is in a tool in the exploration of her artistic process: performance, composition, improvisation, installation, collaboration (with acoustic performers, dancers and other new media performers), video, real-time video mixing, props, print making, pen and ink drawings, mosaic, glass, painting, crayons on different surfaces, water footage and digital animation.
