Week of Events Planned in Celebration of Homecoming 2014

Oct 09, 2014

With the theme “Falcon Impact,” Homecoming 2014 for Fairmont State University on Monday, Oct. 20, through Saturday, Oct. 25, is a week packed with alumni, athletics, student and community events.

“This year we are proud to celebrate our Fairmont State alumni, students, faculty and staff who make an impact in their community,” said Emily Swain, Director of Alumni Affairs. “They are veterans, nurses, police officers, architects and teachers. Falcons give countless volunteer hours to nonprofit agencies, community development organizations and children’s clubs. They give without expectation of reward, but their work makes a Falcon Impact.”

Members of the Falcon family are encouraged to participate in the “Selfies in Service” initiative. Alumni, students and employees can upload photos of themselves volunteering or on the job to an online photo gallery or via Twitter or Facebook using #SelfiesinService. Select photos will be showcased on the scoreboard during FSU’s Homecoming football game on Oct. 25.

In partnership with Main Street Fairmont and Marion County Parks and Recreation (MCPARC), the Fairmont State Alumni Association offers a mix of events in downtown Fairmont in addition to the traditional campus events.

As part of Homecoming 2014 events, the Fairmont State Alumni Association is supporting the volunteer group Make Marion Shine led by alumna Jackie Fitch for a downtown clean-up service project. At 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, students, alumni and community members will meet to pick up trash and help beautify downtown Fairmont.

On Thursday, Oct. 23, there will be a Marion Market Downtown from 4 to 6 p.m. before the Homecoming Parade to showcase local vendors and artisans. A jump house will be available for kids. The parade lineup is at 5:15 p.m. on Everest Drive, and the parade begins at 6 p.m. Parade marshals are alumni Butch Phillips and Aaron Hawkins. Float judging will take place in front of the Marion County Courthouse. Immediately following the parade, there will be a Pep Rally and spirit stick competition on the Courthouse steps featuring Fighting Falcons players and coaches.

The Alumni Association will host a pre-game tailgate at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at Duvall-Rosier Field. The Fighting Falcons take on Urbana at 2 p.m. Following the game, MCPARC offers a new event called Fright Glow from 3 to 10 p.m. at Palatine Park. The event will include entertainment, trick or treat tailgating, contests, vendors and more. Main Street Fairmont and MCPARC host the fourth annual Fairmont NightGLOW 5K Run and 2 Mile Walk at 8 p.m. The race starts at the top of the Gateway Connector.
