Hawkins and Phillips Named as Parade Marshals for Homecoming 2014
The traditional Homecoming Parade for Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College presented by the Office of Student Activities will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, in downtown Fairmont.
FSU alumni Aaron Hawkins, Class of 1971, and Butch Phillips, Class of 1965, both of Fairmont, have been selected as parade marshals for their leadership in the effort to raise $50,000 to take 100 veterans and 50 guardians to Washington, D.C., as part of an Honor Flight from the North Central West Virginia Airport on May 10, 2014.
“In addition to being active members of the Fairmont State Alumni Association, Butch Phillips and Aaron Hawkins are great examples of ‘Falcon Impact,’ the theme of Homecoming 2014,” said Emily Swain, Director of Alumni Affairs. “Fairmont State alumni make a difference in their communities. Without a doubt, the efforts of Butch and Aaron to help make the Honor Flight possible touched many lives.”
Sponsored by the Fairmont State Alumni Association, there will be a Marion Market Downtown from 4 to 6 p.m. before the Homecoming Parade to showcase local vendors and artisans. A jump house and balloon twisting will be available for kids at Veterans Square. Music will be provided by FSU’s Academy for the Arts students and Phil Wiseman starting at 5 p.m.
Line-up for the parade will begin at 5:15 p.m. at Everest Drive and Kirkway Drive below the Marion County Rescue Squad. The parade begins at 6 p.m. The route will run up Fourth Street right onto Fairmont Avenue, which becomes Adams Street, and will pause in front of the Marion County Courthouse for student organization float judging. The parade will end near Veterans’ Square.
A Pep Rally for the Fighting Falcons including the Spirit Stick Competition will be held at 7 p.m. on the steps of the Marion County Courthouse.
