The Nest Student Food Bank Now Open in the Falcon Center

The Nest Student Food Bank has found a new home with Student Government in the Falcon Center.

“The overall mission of The Nest Student Food Bank is to provide students in need with food and other resources,” said Mitch Moore, Student Government President. “I’m looking forward to the future of The Nest, and I have a lot of faith that our community will continue to support this valuable service with donations. Thanks to all of those who have worked to make this possible and who have donated food and money. Student Government is proud to take the lead for this project that directly benefits our fellow students.”

Originally located in the Ruth Ann Musick Library, The Nest is now located on the second floor of the Falcon Center across from the Student Government office, which is near the side building entrance closest to Prichard and Morrow halls.

Starting this week, The Nest is open for students from 5 to 8 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Fairmont State or Pierpont Community & Technical College students who would like to receive food should bring with them a valid student I.D. Although students who have a current meal plan with Fairmont State or Pierpont are not eligible to receive donated food, they can receive donated personal hygiene items.

Non-perishable food donations should be dropped off only during these hours of operation. Monetary donations should be directed to Meagan Gibson, Student Government Advisor, whose office is located in the Turley Center. This week only, donations of food are being accepted in a large, blue bin in the fourth-floor entrance of Wallman Hall. The School of Fine Arts is hosting the West Fork New Music Festival on campus on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 12 and 13. The festival was awarded a $500 2014 Governor’s Day to Serve Mini-grant by Volunteer West Virginia. As part of meeting the Day to Serve goals of feeding the hungry and improving communities, concertgoers are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to the events to donate to The Nest.

Following is a list of suggested items to donate: canned goods (preferably with a flip top), non-frozen microwavable food, soup, canned chicken or tuna, peanut butter, jelly, protein bars, individual fruit cups, individual servings of cereal, shelf milk, pasta, pasta sauce, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, body soap.
