Downtown Art Exhibit Explores Theme of Identity

The Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center is sponsoring a new art exhibit in downtown Fairmont exploring the common theme of identity.

The exhibit called “Identity Within and Without” will be on display throughout the month of September at the Joe-N-Throw Co-Op, 323 ½ Adams Street. The kickoff for the exhibit will take place on Friday, Sept. 5, as part of Main Street Fairmont’s First Friday. An opening reception is planned for 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Joe-N-Throw Co-Op.

Curated by Dr. Tadashi Kato, Associate Professor of Psychology at FSU, the exhibit is hosted by the Joe-N-Throw Co-Op and West Fork Pottery. Participating artists include Olivia Mia Orozco, a video-artist from New York City; Sandra Cress, a sculptor and photographer from Fairmont; David Cerbone, a photographer from Morgantown; Tammy Tennant, a special effect/sculpture/photograph-artist from Morgantown; Michael Ray, a potter from Fairmont; and Robin Belmear, a photographer representing the Folklife Center. Each artist will present original artwork based on his or her unique interpretation of the common theme of identity. The Folklife Center also will provide information on Italian-American heritage and the Calabria-West Virginia Exchange Program.
