FSU Winter Commencement to Take Place Dec. 14
About 150 students will participate in Winter Commencement for Fairmont State University at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, in the Feaster Center. A reception in the Falcon Center will immediately follow the ceremony.

“As a graduate of Fairmont State myself, I know firsthand the life-changing power of a higher education degree. Our graduates are equipped to enter the workforce as highly-qualified and well-prepared employees,” said FSU President Maria Rose. “Of course, Winter Commencement is an exciting time for our graduates and their families, but it is also an important day in the lives of our faculty and staff, who take pride in watching students walk across the stage during the ceremony.”
Dr. Bruce Berry, Chairman of the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, will be the Winter Commencement speaker. A. Scott Barner of Hollywood, W.Va., will be the student speaker representing the Class of 2013.
Bruce Berry, M.D., of Morgantown, recently retired as the medical director at Colombo & Stuhr, P.L.L.C., where he oversaw risk management and quality assurance. For nearly 30 years, Berry had a private practice in Charleston. Berry also served as a clinical instructor, clinical assistant professor and clinical associate professor at West Virginia University’s School of Medicine campus at the Charleston Area Medical Center. In addition to his work with WVU, Berry served as a clinical associate professor with the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. Berry graduated with an A.B. in biology, M.S. in embryology and an M.D. from West Virginia University.
A. Scott Barner has been selected as the senior class representative for the Class of 2013. A graduate of James Monroe High School in Lindside, W.Va., Barner is the son of Tony and Lisa Barner of Hollywood, W.Va. Barner is graduating from FSU with a Bachelor of Arts degree in General Science Education and a Bachelor of Arts degree in French. At FSU, Barner has been president of the Kappa Delta Pi Education Honorary Society, a New Student Counselor, a New Student Counselor Recruiter, a member of the Quiz Bowl Planning Committee, a member of the Campus Compact Student Advisory Board and a diversity training presenter at the FSU and Pierpont Community & Technical College Leadership Conference. Barner also has worked on campus as a sales associate and bookseller at the campus bookstore and as a resident assistant and assistant resident director for the Office of Residence Life. Barner currently teaches biology, anatomy and physiology and French at Hedgesville High School in Martinsburg, W.Va.
Handicapped parking will be available for the event, and staff from the Department of Public Safety will be on hand to direct traffic. The Feaster Center parking lot located directly across Squibb Wilson Boulevard from the Duvall-Rosier Field parking lot will be used for handicapped parking. This lot allows guests to enter the Feaster Center directly onto the arena floor. Seating will be available on the bottom rows of the arena for those with special needs. Sign language interpreting services will be provided during the ceremony. The Office of Disability Services also will provide an Access Kiosk in the Feaster Center during the ceremony that will feature personal FM listening systems that can be checked out. Commencement programs also will be available in large print and Braille.
