"POOF! Plus: An Evening of One-Act Plays" Opens Masquers Season

Sep 12, 2013

The Fairmont State University School of Fine Arts and Masquers theatre group will present “Poof! Plus: An Evening of One-Act Plays” as the first show of the 2013-2014 season.

“Poof! Plus” combines four separate shows in an innovative way to create a message of hope and opportunity. The four one-acts range from comedic and absurd to harrowing and heart-wrenching: “Give Me Shelter” by Wendy Weiner, “Dancing With a Devil” by Brooke Berman, “Forced Out” by Jean Abbott and “Poof!” by Lynn Nottage.  Each of these plays touches on some of the issues faced by women, and though all of the plays were written more than a decade ago, these issues are still relevant in today’s society.

“Poof! Plus: An Evening of One-Act Plays” opens at 7:30 p.m.  Friday, Sept. 27 in Wallman Hall Theatre. Other performances are planned for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28; 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29; and 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 3- 5. Tickets can be ordered online at www.fairmontstate.edu/tickets or by calling the Box Office at (304) 367-4240.

Directed by Dr. John O’Connor, the production also offers many Fairmont State students an opportunity to showcase their creativity. Tyler Kovar, senior theatre major, and Taylor Riffle, senior theatre and education major, are the set designers. Rennes Carbaugh, senior theatre major, is the lighting designer; Beth Mills, senior oral communications education major, is the costume designer; Kurtis Dennison, senior theatre major, is the sound designer; Pamela Chatman, sophomore theatre major is the prop designer; and Lillian Gaylord, senior theatre major, is the resident dramaturge.

The cast for “Poof! Plus” includes FSU students Kurtis Dennison, Kiya Fitzgerald, John Hall, Suzie Hall, Cherie Helsley, Erika Johnson, Bailey Kershner, Brandon Lee, Kaici Lore, Ingrid Poole and Madison Whiting, as well as Kate Thompson, an adjunct communication faculty member.

“Poof! Plus” also has been registered as an associate production in the Region II Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF).  KCACTF is a national festival funded by the Kennedy Center that holds annual regional festivals showcasing unique and outstanding work from colleges within that region. Respondents travel to see shows and determine whether or not a scene from the show will be performed at the festival, which includes workshops designed to help advance students’ understanding and skill. Two actors from FSU will be nominated to compete for the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship, and the designers will be able to take their designs to be adjudicated at the Region II Festival in January 2014.
