College of Science & Technology to Visit 2013 National Scout Jamboree

When thousands of Boy Scouts of America attend the 2013 National Scout Jamboree for the first time at the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in the New River Gorge area on July 15-24, they will have the opportunity to learn about science and technology from Fairmont State University.

FSU’s College of Science and Technology is among those participating in the Technology Quest area, which will showcase science and technology. Every Scout unit will have a chance to visit the Technology Quest “Cloud,” where Scouts can participate in multiple activities.

“We will conduct a series of interactive demonstrations to allow Scouts to experience STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) concepts,” said Dr. Anthony Gilberti, Dean of the College of Science and Technology.

Gilberti, who is an Eagle Scout, said he was pleased the opportunity arose for FSU to participate in the technology festival. Gilberti, College of Science and Technology staff member Dennis Mitchell and several FSU students will be on hand for the week of the Jamboree to talk with Scouts.

The Technology Quest “Cloud” will be located in a series of tents featuring different science and technology demonstrations and activities. From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, Scout units will take turns visiting the Quest area.

FSU demonstrations will include high technology surveying equipment that will teach Scouts how to establish and obtain accurate distance measurements; a rapid prototyper allowing the use of CAD software and a 3D printer to design and produce a 3D version of the 2013 National Scout Jamboree at Summit logo as a giveaway for the Scouts; and a computerized numerically controlled woodcarver that also will allow Scouts to produce a 3D version of the Jamboree logo to keep.

“We will be able to mass produce these cool 3D pieces right in front of the Scouts, and we hope these will serve as cherished keepsakes for them to remind them of their wonderful Jamboree experience in West Virginia,” Gilberti said.
