Whetstone Literary Journal Wins Awards

Feb 15, 2013

Issue 31 of Whetstone, Fairmont State University’s undergraduate arts and literary journal, recently won First Place with Special Honors in the 2012 Scholastic Magazine Awards competition hosted by the American Scholastic Press Association. The journal also won an award for Outstanding Use of Color.

Issue 31 was produced under the editorship of Managing Editor Michelle Yost, a 2012 graduate of Fairmont State, with the assistance of Literary Editor Chris Vance, Art Editor Elizabeth Sorenson and staff including Alexander Elamson, Sara Garcia, Shasta Gibson, Susannah Hense and Marisa Stickel. The issue featured art by Melissa May and poetry by Sally Rosen Kindred, along with other work submitted by students, writers and artists.

Founded in 1995, Whetstone was created by and for undergraduates at Fairmont State University. The student editorial staff publishes high-quality writing of all genres, including fiction, poetry, drama and nonfiction, as well as art of all media. The editorial staff believes that publishing this work is an important way to support developing and established writers and artists.

Student publications like Whetstone allow students to hone their writing, editing, photographic and graphic-design skills in professional settings, using advanced computer technology.

Students interested in being part of the editorial staff are invited early in the fall semester to an informational meeting. Students may receive course credit for work on the journal.
