FSU and Pierpont to Host Global Day of Code Retreat

Dec 06, 2012

The North Central West Virginia Global Day of Code Retreat on Saturday, Dec. 8, is an opportunity for professional software developers to focus on lifelong learning.

The Global Day of Code Retreat is an international event with the goal of running as many parallel code retreats around the world on a single day as possible. Innovative Management and Technology Services (IMTS), the West Virginia High Technology Consortium Foundation (WVHTCF), the Robert H. Mollohan Family Charitable Foundation, the I-79 Development Council, Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College will host the first-ever local code retreat and only West Virginia event from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Falcon Center on the FSU and Pierpont shared main campus in Fairmont.

Those who attend the free event will have the opportunity to network with other developers and learn about software construction principles and practices. Amateur, novice and seasoned programmers should attend. All programming languages are welcome. Participants should bring a spare keyboard and mouse for pair programming, a power bar and scrap paper for drawing ideas. Lunch will be provided.

The day will begin with coffee and a short keynote address. Participants will be split into pairs and will implement Conway’s Game of Life using test-driven development techniques in the language of the pair’s choice. Pairs will work for 45 minutes. Sessions will end by each team deleting their code, and then the group will discuss lessons learned and share ideas. The process will be repeated. The facilitator may issue a challenge for a session to try to get attendees to try something new. The day will end with a question and answer session.
