Presentation to Focus on Northern Ireland and West Virginia

Nov 09, 2012

A presentation and discussion titled “From Belfast Northern Ireland to North Central West Virginia” will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, in Multi-media Room A of the Ruth Ann Musick Library on the shared main campus of Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College.

The presentation and discussion will compare conflict and poverty in Northern Ireland and North Central West Virginia in relationship to community sustainability and economic development. The work of the East Belfast Mission and other groups in Belfast and four United Methodist Mission Projects in West Virginia provide the basis for the comparison.

Fairmont State students Brittney Allen, Brigitte Satterfield and Holly White will make the presentation. These students participated in The Roads to Appalachia course and study tour to Northern Ireland in July sponsored by the Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center. Rev. Richard Bowyer, who helped to organize the trip, will introduce the presentation and the students.

The event is sponsored by the Wesley Foundation at Fairmont State and Pierpont, the Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center and the FSU Behavioral Sciences Department. Refreshments will be provided by the Wesley Foundation. Admission is free and open to the public.
