Student Affairs Speaker Series to Host McCain and Black

Sep 25, 2012

The Office of Student Affairs, which serves Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College, brings nationally prominent speakers of diverse viewpoints to campus each fall and spring.

On Tuesday, Oct. 2, the shared main campus will host a conversation with Meghan McCain, daughter of U.S. Sen. John McCain and author of the blog McCainBlogette.com, and comedian Michael Ian Black. The event will take place at 7 p.m. in Colebank Hall Gym. The pair will take part in a moderated discussion with questions focusing on topics being discussed nationally as they pertain to the upcoming Presidential election.

In 2011, McCain and Black embarked on a cross-country road trip, speaking with people from many different political viewpoints about their differences, similarities, beliefs and opinions. McCain and Black are now speaking about the experience, deliberating in front of audiences about a wide variety of issues from politics and food to the legalization of marijuana and gay marriage. McCain is the author of a book called “America, You Sexy Bitch: A Love Letter to Freedom.”

“We believe that the development of our student body must include exposure to a variety of ideas. Through this exposure, our students will be better prepared to operate in an increasingly complex society,” said Laurie Johnston, Director of Student Activities.

Admission is free and open to the public. Tickets are not required. Sign Language Interpreting and other accommodations for those with disabilities are available by request by contacting Andrea Pammer by phone at (304) 367-4686 or e-mail at Andrea.Pammer@fairmontstate.edu or Andrea.Pammer@pierpont.edu.
