Falcon Center Hosts Fitness Fair; Weight Room Dedication Planned

Apr 13, 2012

The Falcon Center on the shared main campus of Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College is hosting a Fitness Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 21.

At 10:30 a.m. on April 21, the weight room on the second floor of the Falcon Center will be dedicated to Dustin M. Burdoff, a Fairmont State University student who enjoyed spending time in the Falcon Center and had many friends in the campus community. He passed away Sept. 4, 2010, and was posthumously awarded degree from the FSU School of Business during the May 2011 Spring Commencement.

Along with Dustin M. Burdoff’s photos, a plaque displayed in the weight room reads: “In Honor of Dustin Burdoff: A young man of character, sincerity, and a joyful presence that will be remembered by all he encountered and inspired. A true representative of entrepreneurial spirit.”

A foundation has been set up in Dustin’s memory.  Some of the funds from this foundation have been donated to the Falcon Center for renovations to the weight room where Dustin enjoyed spending time.  Dustin’s parents, family members, friends and generous members of the community are to be credited for making these renovations possible. Robin Yeager, Director of the Falcon Center, has used these funds to extend the Tuflex flooring in the weight room to keep dropped weights from cracking the floor. All new dumbbells also have been purchased with these funds.

“I knew Dustin from visiting Ace Hardware first, and he was a great kid. I saw him all the time in the weight room,” Yeager said. “Students have noticed the improvements to the weight room. They say ‘wow’ when they notice how the extended flooring makes the room less crowded and that they can use the new weights. I tell them it’s all because of the dedication of this one father. It is only fitting that we honor this gift and remember Dustin.”

A Zumbathon is planned for 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Gym 1 of the Falcon Center. Health screenings for blood pressure and levels of glucose and cholesterol will be available.

There will be a Falcon Powerlifting competition in the second floor Main Street area of the Falcon Center at 1 p.m. For information on that activity, contact Tim Cochran at (304) 615-3984 or Ricky Sanchez at (304) 483-9775.

Admission to the Fitness Fair is open to the public. No admission fee will be charged, but donations will be accepted with proceeds benefitting the Dustin M. Burdoff Foundation. For more information about the Foundation, contact Victoria Colasessano at (304) 278-8057 or dmbfoundation@gmail.com. The Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of entrepreneurship in business by offering resources to FSU and FSU’s School of Business.
