Expert on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder to Visit Fairmont

Mar 09, 2012

To aid the community in better understanding and caring for veterans, Fairmont State University, Pierpont Community & Technical College and Fairmont General Hospital will host the visit of an internationally recognized educator, author and expert on veterans and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Dr. Edward Tick, who has been honored for his groundbreaking work in the holistic and community-based healing of veterans and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), will visit Fairmont on Monday and Tuesday, March 19 and 20. Tick will meet with staff at Fairmont General Hospital on March 19. The following day, he will participate in several events on the shared main campus of FSU and Pierpont, including a veteran outreach event sponsored by the Student Veterans Organization and sessions with faculty and staff who work with student veterans.

The public is invited to attend a Town Hall Lecture from 6 to 8 p.m. March 20 in Colebank Hall Gym. Following the lecture, Tick will be available to sign copies of three of his books, which also will be available for sale through the Bound for Success Bookstore on campus.

“Dr. Ed Tick is highly regarded for bringing healing to veterans, communities and nations recovering from the traumas of war and violence. We encourage the community to attend the Town Hall Lecture to learn about how we as a community can meet the needs of those who have served our nation in the Armed Forces,” said Chaplain James R. Riggs of Fairmont General Hospital.

The founding director of Soldier’s Heart: Veterans’ Safe Return Programs, Tick has been a psychotherapist for 33 years, specializing in working with veterans since the 1970s. He is the author of “The Practice of Dream Healing,” “The Golden Tortoise,” “Wild Beasts and Wandering Souls” and the award-winning book “War and the Soul.”

Tick is an internationally recognized educator and expert on veterans, PTSD and the psychology of military-related issues and has conducted trainings, retreats and workshops across the country. His work continues to gain interest and credibility with the military, having spoken at West Point, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Fort Hood, Fort Knox, Altus Air Force Base and other Department of Defense facilities. He is a tireless advocate for peace, lecturing throughout the world and leading semi-annual international educational, healing and reconciliation journeys to Viet Nam and Greece.

The FSU online calendar details Tick's visit and upcoming events.
