Wind Ensemble to Present March 8 Concert
Under the direction of Dr. Valarie Huffman and Matthew Schoonmaker, the Fairmont State University Wind Ensemble will present the Mid-Winter Concert: “Around the World in 80 Minutes or Less…” at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 8, in Wallman Hall Theatre.
Admission to the concert is free to the public; however, donations will be accepted toward the fundraising for new uniforms that the marching band will be debuting this fall.
The music for the concert represents a sampling of music from across the world. The title is a play on words of the title of the famous book by Jules Verne, “Around the World in 80 Days.” The pieces represent four of the seven continents--North America, Europe, Asia and South America--in a variety of styles and origins.
The music to be performed includes “Suite of Old American Dances” by Robert Russell Bennett, “Finlandia” by Jean Sibelius, “Berceuse and Finale” from “Firebird” by Igor Stravinsky, “Variations on a Korean Folk Song” by John Barnes Chance and “Ritual Fire Dance” by Manuel deFalla.
