Canstruction Competition Helps Fight Hunger

Fairmont State University’s American Institute of Architecture Students organization will be competing in the 2012 Canstruction competition in Charleston on Tuesday, March 6. While constructing an object made entirely out of cans is half the battle, the real focus of the event is battling hunger.

Covenant House and the American Institute of Architects-West Virginia are teaming up for the sixth consecutive year to present the competition.

The competition allows teams of architecture firms and other businesses or organizations from across the state to showcase their talent and help fill the shelves of local food pantries. Teams will gather at the Clay Center and spend the day creating their entry within a 10’x10’x8’h space. Entries will then be judged on the following categories: structural integrity, best use of labels, best meal, jurors' favorite, most cans used and people's choice.

At the completion of the event, the FSU team hopes to bring back 1,600 cans to deliver to the Soup Opera in Fairmont.

Community members are encouraged to cheer on the team on March 6 at the Clay Center in Charleston and to vote for their favorite entry on March 7.
