World Language Immersion Day Set for Oct. 11

The Fairmont State University Department of Language and Literature will host the third annual World Language Immersion Day for area high school and junior high students on Tuesday, Oct. 11. Students coming to campus will participate in activities designed to use language skills actively and promote understanding of international culture.

Fairmont State’s language program coordinators look forward to meeting and working with students who have varied experience and reasons for learning French and Spanish. 

“It’s a great chance for the high school students to meet other language learners in the area and to think ahead toward continuing their studies at the university level.  We are happy to welcome them to campus for the day,” said Dr. Erin Hippolyte, Assistant Professor of French.

Dr. Julie Sellers, Assistant Professor of Spanish, pointed to the benefit of active learning: “Immersion Day activities literally take language learning and use out of the classroom and place both in an active and enjoyable setting.”

Immersion Day is also a chance for a broader audience to meet and work with the Fulbright Language Teaching Assistants, Laura Gil and Anna Guerrero, who are visiting from Argentina and France this year and teaching in the language programs.

Activities will run from 9:30 a.m. until noon, followed by lunch and social time with FSU students and faculty until departure at 1 p.m.  More than 400 students from 10 schools will participate.  The event is also supported by FSU GEAR UP.

Schools sending students to World Language Immersion Day include Doddridge Middle, East Fairmont Junior High, Hedgesville High, Hundred High, Longdrain, North Marion High, Parkersburg, Preston High Taylor County Middle and Williamstown.
