"Oksoberfest" Marks 2011 Alcohol, Substance Abuse and Sexuality Awareness Week

Oct 05, 2011

Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College students will observe Alcohol, Substance Abuse and Sexuality Awareness Week with a combination of events surrounding the theme, "Oksoberfest."

Students will hear from a variety of speakers and participate in a number of alcohol-free social activities featuring free food and prizes. An information booth will be located inside the first floor entrance of the Falcon Center from Monday, Oct. 10, to Thursday, Oct 13, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. daily.  Additionally, an information booth sponsored by the Gay/Straight Alliance will provide sexuality awareness information from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the second floor Main Street area of the Falcon Center from Monday, Oct. 10, to Thursday, Oct 13.

Monday's events will include a presentation by Pruntytown Correctional inmates titled "Fairmont State Story” at 6 p.m. in Multi-Media Room A of the Ruth Ann Musick Library. The public is invited to attend this special presentation.

Events for Tuesday, Oct. 11, include a mix-off from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on the Main Street of the Falcon Center. The mix-off, which is sponsored by Student Government, features student organizations competing to create the best tasting non-alcoholic drink. Free refreshments and T-shirts will be available.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 12, there will be a drug crash simulator sponsored by Delta Zeta outside of the main entrance of the Falcon Center.

From noon to 1:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, there will be an activity called BYOB (Bring Your Own Banana). Students will be given free ice cream sundaes courtesy of Sigma Sigma Sigma. Also, students will have the opportunity to try out "sobriety glasses," sponsored by Delta Xi Omicron. The glasses show the wearer how alcohol distorts a person's faculties. The winner of the obstacle course will receive a free sweatshirt.

From 3 to 4 p.m. in Multi-media Room A of the Ruth Ann Musick Library, Mark Husk will give a talk titled "Not So Common Sense."
