Author Valerie Nieman to Present Reading on Oct. 13

Author and former Fairmont State University adjunct faculty member, Valerie Nieman, will be on campus at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 13, reading from her new book "Blood Clay." 

Set in rural North Carolina, the novel tells the story of Tracey Gaines, a recent transplant from Ohio, and explores the lack of connection with the community, framed by a traumatic, violent act.

This is the author’s third novel. Her works also include a collection of short stories, titled "Fidelities," and "Wake Wake Wake," a collection of poetry. She was won several awards and fellowships, including the 1999 Greg Grummer Prize in poetry and the 1998 and 2002 Elizabeth Simpson Smith prizes.

Nieman is a West Virginia University graduate and completed her M.F.A . in creative writing at Queens University of Charlotte in 2004. She is currently an associate professor at North Carolina A&T State University. While here at Fairmont, she was one of the founding editors of Kestrel: A Journal of Literature and Art in the New World, Fairmont State University’s literary journal.

Nieman’s reading will be in the third floor Conference Rooms in the Falcon Center.  It is open to the public.
