Family Weekend Events Begin on Sept. 16

Sep 13, 2011

Parents and family members of Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College students are invited to participate in Family Weekend 2011, with the theme “Join in the Game.”

“As a parent, guardian, or significant other, we realize that your on-going support is important to the success of your student. Our sincere hope is that you are comfortable and feel at home whenever you visit the campus. Family Weekend is a special time for us on campus because we do realize just how important it is for you to remain connected and involved with your student,” said Dr. Quentin Johnson, Senior Vice President of Enrollment and Student Services.

The weekend of events kicks off on Friday, Sept. 16. An exhibit called “Anamnesis – Okeanos” by Kathleen Holder will be on display in the Brooks Gallery, located on the fourth floor of Wallman Hall from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration for Family Weekend will be from 5 to 6 p.m. on the first floor of the Falcon Center. Those who attend are asked to participate in the Family Weekend Food Drive by bringing a canned food item to be donated to a local pantry.

Friday evening events include a cookout from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on the Falcon Center lawn. The Amazing Craig Karges will perform from 8 to 10 p.m. in Colebank Hall Gym.

Karges, the “extraordinist,” is an award-winning entertainer, a nationally recognized speaker and an author. Karges has made over 4,000 appearances in 17 countries on four continents and in all 50 states. He combines the art of magic with the science of psychology and the power of intuition to create the impression that nothing is impossible. Tables float, minds are read, metal bends and imaginations are challenged.

From the entertainment oriented “Tonight Show” to the news oriented “Larry King Live,” Craig Karges has made over 40 national television appearances. He’s also appeared on CNN Headline News, Fox News Channel, CNBC, E! Entertainment Television, Lifetime Television, Wisdom Television and SOAPnet. The “extraordinist” has starred in two, one-hour television specials. Karges first became popular touring college campuses. He was named Entertainer of the Year six times by the National Association for Campus Activities (NACA).

Activities for Saturday, Sept. 17, include a brunch from 10 a.m. to noon in the Dining Hall, located on the third floor of the Falcon Center. Visitors to campus are invited to watch the Fighting Falcons football team take on Glenville State College’s Pioneers at noon at Duvall-Rosier Field.

Several activities are planned surrounding the game. From 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Yesteryear’s Old Time Photos will be available. A bean bag toss challenge is planned for 11 a.m. to noon; and face painting is available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Ice cream will be served from noon to 2 p.m., sponsored by the Erickson Alumni Center.

With the help of thousands of Falcon Fanatics, FSU earned its first National Award of Excellence for Community Engagement from the NCAA Division II for 2010-2011. This year’s effort has been expanded to three games. The Sept. 17 football game will be the second event. At the game, visitors can “Experience Fairmont at Fairmont State” by visiting area businesses and organizations at booths at Duvall-Rosier Field. The Fairmont State Alumni Association is hosting a post-game reception at the Erickson Alumni Center at about 2:30 p.m.

On Sunday, Sept. 18, visitors are invited to attend the women’s tennis match. FSU takes on West Virginia State University at 11 a.m. at the tennis courts by Duvall-Rosier Field.
