Education Students Partner with Reading Council to Sponsor Yard Sale

Nov 05, 2010

Kappa Delta Pi, an Education Honorary at Fairmont State University, recently partnered with the Marion County Reading Council to sponsor a teaching materials yard sale.

The purpose of the sale was to provide preservice teacher candidates with materials they could use as they begin preparation for teaching and to fund service projects for the Reading Council. Just before the summer 2010 break, public school teachers in the county donated new or gently used teaching materials as they cleaned out their classrooms. KDP members worked during the first month of school to tag and organize the donations and then publicized and coordinated the event.

The sale resulted in a profit of over $500, which was presented to the Marion County Reading Council at its October 2010 meeting. Co-presidents Sherry Dickerson and Twyla Rote accepted the donation to fund community service projects for the upcoming year. Past projects include the Main Street Fairmont Story Walk, Books for Babies, Books Aren't Just for Babies (large print materials for nursing homes and assisted living facilities) and a children's reading event at the Summersville Quilt Festival.
