Campus Bookstore to Host Book Signing on Nov. 10
A Fairmont State University faculty member has written a new book titled "Unemployment Ended by Community Restored" that examines ideas to reduce unemployment and poverty.
Dr. Craig C. White, Professor, Senior Level, of Sociology, will sign copies of his book at the Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College Bookstore, located on the second floor of the Falcon Center, is planned from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10.
Part of White's proposed solution to unemployment is the Pathways Advancing Community Employment (PACE) project, an idea that goes back to the 1990s and his previous book titled "Toward the Resolution of Poverty in America." A chapter in White's new book addresses the PACE project. A campus coordinating committee on the PACE project has been formed and is exploring opportunities to begin community projects in Marion County and possibly India.
Dr. Paul E. Edwards, Professor Emeritus at Pierpont Community & Technical College, wrote a review of "Unemployment Ended by Community Restored."
In that review, Edwards states: "The real issue behind the current ‘Great Recession' is jobs, jobs, jobs, and Professor White contends that structural deficiencies are not a short-term crisis. When government employment, tax incentives, stimulus programs and the private enterprise system fall short, a ‘Third Sector' is required. Of course private enterprise will continue to be the main source of job creation. But what happens when the entrepreneurial spirit isn't enough? Now think federally funded, community-based WPA-like, designed programs to stimulate the economy and to provide unemployment and meet local needs which currently aren't being funded. These would not be ‘make work' programs but ones which modernize American infrastructure."
White, who has taught at Fairmont State since 1967, earned a bachelor's degree in sociology in 1965 from Bethany College and a master's degree in sociology in 1967 and a Doctorate in the Social Psychology of Sport in 1977 from West Virginia University. His scholarly and teaching interests include the study of inequality, poverty, unemployment, community, social change and social movements. In 1991 and in 1993, he served as the project manager for two Marion County community-wide needs assessments; the first was sponsored by the United Way and the second by the Governor's Cabinet on Families and Children. In 1994, he delivered the Presidential Lecture titled "The American Community: Decline and Restoration." He is the author of two editions of a book titled "Toward the Resolution of Poverty in America." He was men's tennis coach at Fairmont State for 18 years and has authored an instructional book on tennis.
White resides in Fairmont with his wife Pat and has three adult sons, Colin, Davin and Andy.
