Week of Events Planned in Celebration of Homecoming 2010
With the theme, "Metropolitan Mania," Homecoming 2010 for Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College, set for Oct. 25-30, will be a week packed with alumni, athletics, student and community events.
"The theme, ‘Metropolitan Mania,' focuses on different aspects of city life. All throughout the week, we will be having contests and events to highlight some of the elements typically found in a city. Students do not want to miss out on taking part during this week," said Jessica L. Kromer, Student Government Vice President.
As a Homecoming tradition, all student clubs and organizations that are sponsoring a king or queen candidate participate in a community service project. Students donate money, wish list items or time to area non-profit organizations.
"This year we will be helping two local shelters: the Union Mission and Scott Place. This event is also open to all of campus to help to raise funds, items or time. We hope to have a large turn-out of support this year," said Student Government President Alicia Nieman.
Items and money to benefit the two shelters will be collected from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 27 and Oct. 29 in the second floor Main Street area of the Falcon Center. Students will also be donating their time during the week of Homecoming.
"We like to include at least one new event each year where we can invite our community members to campus in order to connect our current students with the people who have helped support our institutions throughout the years," Johnston said.
In keeping with the "Metropolitan Mania" theme of activities that could be found in a larger city, this year's community event is a dance concert being presented by the West Virginia Dance Company and sponsored by Student Government. The event is 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, at Colebank Hall Gym. Admission is free and open to the public. Also at this event, the Homecoming king and queen candidates will be introduced during intermission.
The mission of the West Virginia Dance Company, based in Beckley, is to provide projects and performances at a statewide level that will offer the best value and quality within the framework of West Virginia and 21st Century Learning Skills and multicultural perspectives. The WVDC is a recipient of the 2010 West Virginia Governor's Arts in Education Award. Thursday, Oct. 21
As part of the Celebration of Ideas Lecture Series, alumnus Clinton Cooper will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, in the Turley Center Ballroom. Clinton Cooper is originally from Parkersburg. He graduated with honors from Fairmont State College in 1994 with a degree in marketing, a degree in management, a minor in psychology and a minor in finance. Cooper is a wealth manager advisor and senior investment specialist with Northwestern Mutual Financial Network in San Diego, Calif.
Monday, Oct. 25
From 7 to 9 p.m. at the Feaster Center, there will be an FSU women's volleyball game against Seton Hill. Admission is free. Student Government will sponsor mini-contests between each set. The Junk to Funk Fashion Contest will take place at the end of the final match. All FSU and Pierpont students are eligible to participate in the fashion contest by using recyclable materials to create a piece of wearable fashion. Thursday, Oct. 28
Fairmont Forward: A Ribbon-Cutting Gala is planned for 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, at the Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center on Squibb-Wilson Boulevard on main campus. The event will celebrate the completion of the first floor of the Folklife Center. As part of the celebration, the B.B. Maurer Folklife Scholar Award and the Traditions Salute Award will be presented. Wassail, savories and sweets will be served; tours of the facility will be available.
The traditional Homecoming Parade presented by Student Government will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, in downtown Fairmont. Student Government has selected FSU's Competitive Cheer Team members, as parade marshals. Coached by Kristi Kiefer, the team won its sixth national NCA title in April 2010 in competition at Daytona Beach, Fla. Line-up for the parade will begin at 5:15 p.m. at Everest Drive below the Marion County Rescue Squad. The parade route will run up Fourth Street right onto Fairmont Avenue, which becomes Adams Street, and will pause in front of the Marion County Courthouse. The parade will end near Veterans' Square.
Presented by Student Government, the annual Pep Rally will begin at 7 p.m. at the Falcon's Nest at Duvall-Rosier Field. In case of rain, the event will take place in the Feaster Center. FSU and Pierpont clubs will compete for the Spirit Stick, as cheerleaders and the band lead the crowd in cheering on the Fighting Falcons. Homecoming court candidates, the football coaches and team captains will also be introduced. There will be live music by the Davisson Brothers.
Friday, Oct. 29
As part of the celebration of the opening of the Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center, a Quilt Reading is planned for 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 29. Fawn Valentine, 2010 Traditions Salute Award winner, will "read" local quilts. The public is invited to bring their quilts to be analyzed and share in the beauty of this time honored tradition.
As part of the celebration of the opening of the Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center, a Silent Auction and Open House is planned for 1 to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29. Tours of the Folklife Center will be given. A selection of folkloric and interesting items will be available for bidding during the auction, which closes on Saturday, Oct. 30. Students will be on hand to answer questions and to share their experiences in the folklore and museum studies programs.
The Fairmont State Alumni Association will celebrate the golden anniversary of the class of 1960. Sponsored by WesBanco, the Fairmont State Emeritus Club luncheon will take place at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 29, in the Falcon Center third floor conference rooms. The Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Celebration of Championship Teams will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, in the Falcon Center Gym 1. The Class of 2010 includes Teresa (Haggerty) Boggs, Chris Humphries, Ed Lemon, Jason Gallaher, Dave Ritchie and Tom Schweitzer. In addition to the inductees, the Fairmont State Athletic Association will continue its recent tradition of welcoming back and celebrating notable Fighting Falcon athletic teams. This year, two teams will be honored: the 1957 football team that went a perfect 7-0 and won the conference championship under Deacon Duvall and the 1975 WVIAC championship swim team under Steve Mahaney.

Six distinguished alumni will be honored at noon Saturday, Oct. 30, at the Alumni Awards Lunch in the Falcon Center Gym 1. The event is sponsored by Thrasher Engineering, Inc. Admission is $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Dr. Thomas Z. Jones '69 and Dr. Marilyn Jean Murphy Fore ‘71 will receive the Alumni of Achievement Award; Joseph F. "Bud" Ford, III '73 and Deborah Davisson Phelps ‘73 will receive the Outstanding Alumni Award; and Dr. Scott Rosencrance '92 and Amanda Beafore '02 will receive the Outstanding Young Alumni Award. The Fighting Falcons take on Seton Hill for the Homecoming football game at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at Duvall-Rosier Field. The game is sponsored by Brickstreet Insurance. Tickets are $12 for reserved seatbacks; $8 for adults; and $4 for children age 14 and younger. A Post-Game Reception is planned at the Erickson Alumni Center immediately following the game; tickets are $5 per person.
At half-time of the game, the Homecoming King and Queen will be crowned. Selection will take place by a random drawing in front of the entire crowd at Duvall-Rosier Field.
