FSU Participating in EPA Game Day Challenge on Oct. 30
Those who plan to tailgate and participate in activities on Saturday, Oct. 30, related to the Fighting Falcons football game against Seton Hill are encouraged to help Fairmont State University win a recycling challenge.
FSU is one of 87 colleges and universities in the nation participating in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Game Day Challenge to promote waste reduction at football games. The friendly competition is an initiative of the EPA's WasteWise program.
During the month of October 2010, colleges and universities have implemented waste reduction programs during a home football game. Schools track and report recycling and waste data that will be used to rank their success; EPA will announce the winners in November.
The student organization Students Taking Action in Nature's Defense (STAND) is the main sponsor for the Game Day Challenge and has chosen the Saturday, Oct. 30, Homecoming football game as FSU's official game. The Physical Plant is also supporting the effort. New recycling containers from the Monongalia County Solid Waste Authority have been placed on campus. Other support has come from a REAP grant through the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection. Student Government is supporting the challenge by recycling at the Homecoming dance tonight, Oct. 29.
Dr. Erica Harvey, one of the faculty advisors for STAND, said the goal is to have 100 percent participation in recycling at tomorrow's game and surrounding activities. She said that the group performed a practice run at the Oct. 23 football game and that the results from that effort were the following:
- 57 pounds of bottles recycled.
- 4 pounds of aluminum cans recycled.
- 104 pounds of trash collected.
