Residence Life Volunteers Help Clean Up Locust Avenue

Aug 16, 2010

About 30 resident assistants (RAs) and staff from the Office of Residence Life of Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College spent a sweaty Saturday morning cleaning up Locust Avenue.

The volunteers picked up and bagged trash and pulled weeds along Locust Avenue from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 14. The area of focus was from Fairmont General Hospital past the two entrances to main campus, past the Oakwood Road intersection to about Sixth Street.

Resident assistants in the campus residence halls participated in training all week to prepare for move-in for students this week. Move-in begins Thursday, Aug. 19. The first day of classes for FSU and Pierpont is Monday, Aug. 23.

The staff and students wanted to incorporate a community service project into this year's training week. They worked with Donna Yergovich Nuzum in the Office of Community Service Learning to select and plan a project. The Locust Avenue location was selected as a clean-up focus as a way to give back to the community that surrounds the campus.

The Public Works Department of the City of Fairmont and Jamie Colanero of the campus Physical Plant donated tools and safety equipment for the volunteers to use during the project. The city workers are also supporting the project by picking up the garbage collected and sweeping the street.
