Prepare for "Real World" at Conference

Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College are hosting a Leadership Conference with the theme "Life in the Real World: Preparing for and Living in the World Around Us."

Planned for Feb. 20 and 21, the conference is designed for high school students, college students, college and university faculty and staff, prospective leaders and parents. The event is sponsored by the Office of Student Affairs and the Fairmont State GEAR UP Partnership.

The $35 registration fee includes all meals and refreshments, a movie, interactive sessions and presentations by speakers. Registration is free for FSU and Pierpont students. For more information, contact the Office of Student Affairs at (304) 367-4215.

The conference will focus on strengthening professional and personal skills to enable participants to be successful in today's competitive workforce. The ultimate goal of the conference is to equip and encourage students to attack the challenges of today by becoming effective leaders with solid solutions that will make a positive difference.

Registration begins Feb. 20 at 5 p.m. in the Turley Center Ballroom on the FSU and Pierpont main campus. Other events for Friday include a business attire fashion show, a women's roundtable called "Professional Chic" and a men's roundtable titled "Highly Polished & Professional." The documentary "Murderball" will be shown at 8:30 p.m.

Saturday's events include the keynote address at 10 a.m. The keynote speaker will be Mark Zupan, star of the film "Murderball" that won the 2005 Sundance Festival Documentary Audience Award. He was a gold medalist as part of the U.S. team at the Beijing Paralympic Games in 2008. Zupan, who was paralyzed in a car accident while a student at Florida Atlantic university, was a two-time quad rugby champion and the 2004 quad rugby player of the year. He recently published an autobiography titled "Gimp."

Breakout sessions are planned throughout the day on Saturday on the following topics: "From Backpack to Briefcase," "Ultimate Money Skills: Scholars, Dollars, Budgets & Bills," "Step Up and Step Out: Defining Your Role in Diversity," "Ethics 101," "International Student Panel" and "Davis Mallory from MTV's 'Real World.'" The conference will end about 4 p.m. with a presentation of certificates and door prizes.
