Contractors Association Awards Scholarships

Apr 04, 2008

The Contractors Association of West Virginia Scholarship Foundation distributed $13,500 this year to West Virginia college students pursuing an education and a career in construction or engineering. Recipients were selected on the basis of their academic performance, extracurricular activities, work experience, financial need and interest in a construction industry career. Eligible schools are West Virginia University, West Virginia University Institute of Technology, Marshall University, Fairmont State University and Bluefield State College.

Ken Hacker, a junior civil engineering student at Fairmont State University, is the recipient of the CAWV's $4,000 scholarship award for 2008.

"The Scholarship Foundation showed great interest in my background and education, making me feel as though I am on the right track for a successful career in the construction industry," Hacker said as he accepted the scholarship at the CAWV's 2008 State Meeting Luncheon held on March 19. "Thank you for your generosity."

The Scholarship Foundation Board of Trustees awarded additional scholarships Matt Cayton and Corry Weaver from Marshall University; Joshua White from Fairmont State University; Eric Baker, Richard Rohrssen, 'Jeffrey' Dan Rollins and Ben Walls from West Virginia University; and Matthew Skeen and Jonathan West from WVU Institute of Technology.

The Foundation also awarded $1,000 to the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of America and $500 each to three local vocational schools to assist in developing skilled tradespeople needed for the future. Schools receiving the award are Carver Career and Technical Education Center, Putnam Career and Technical Center and Roane-Jackson Technical Center.

The CAWV, the state's largest full service construction association, represents approximately 500 firms in the building, highway and utility construction industry throughout West Virginia.
