Lollanobooza' Set for Oct. 22-26
Fairmont State University students will observe Alcohol, Substance Abuse and Sexuality
Awareness Week with events that take on the theme, "Lollanobooza."
During the weeklong observance, students will hear from a variety of speakers and
participate in a number of alcohol-free activities featuring free food and prizes.
An information booth, sponsored by Increasing Our Faith Club, will be located inside
the entrance of the Falcon Center Monday through Thursday, Oct. 22-25, from 11 a.m.-1
p.m.
On Monday, Oct. 22, at 6 p.m., in the Ruth Ann Musick Library, Multi-media Room A,
students will have the opportunity to hear from Pruntytown Correctional Facility inmates
who have been incarcerated for crimes related to drug and alcohol abuse. The event
is being sponsored by Alpha Phi Sigma. Free T-shirts will be given to the first 10
people attending.
On Tuesday, Oct. 23, from noon-1:30 p.m., two events will be featured. BYOB (Bring
Your Own Banana) will take place inside the main entrance to the Falcon Center. Students
will be given free ice cream sundaes courtesy of Sigma Sigma Sigma. At the same time
and location students will have the opportunity to try out "sobriety glasses." The
glasses show the wearer how alcohol distorts your faculties. The winning negotiator
of the Sobriety Glasses Obstacle Course will win a free iPod Shuffle. The eight runners-up
will receive free T-shirts.
On Wednesday, Oct. 24, a new contest, sponsored by Delta Zeta, will be an addition
to the week's line-up of events. "Take Aim against Sexual Assault," will take place
on the third floor balcony of the Falcon Center, located near the conference rooms.
Students will sign their names to copies of sexual assault statistics and then make
a paper airplane to fly into the quad below. The owners of the planes coming closest
to hitting a target will be named the winners. The first-place winner will receive
a free iPod Shuffle and the eight runners-up will receive free T-shirts.
"Many students don't realize how high the statistics are for people who are sexually
assaulted, and this helps make them aware of the violence associated with the crime,"
said Kat Stevens, Student Services Counselor.
On Thursday, Oct. 25, Student Government will cap the week's events from 7-8:30 p.m.
in Falcon Center Gym 1 with a mix-off emceed by WVAQ's Lacy Neff. During this event,
organizations compete to make the best tasting non-alcoholic drink. The mix-off will
feature free refreshments, prizes and T-shirts and a "Sober Limbo" contest.
"This week provides a great opportunity for our students to see how they can have
fun without alcohol and also learn about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse," Stevens
said.
